The summer (we think) is the best time of year. However, the heat can not only have an effect on people but can also affect our pets. While our attention related to this typically revolves around dogs, cats can also be affected by the summer heat (even if they can handle the heat better than us). As such, here are some tips/tricks and things to keep in mind when it comes to keeping your feline cool and comfortable for the summer.
- Keep your cat well-groomed – consider brushing your cat to keep their coat tangle-free. Also, consider having your cat professionally clipped during the summer (especially if they are long-furred cats).
- Leave cool/fresh water around the house. This will encourage your cat to drink more often and help to keep them cool.
- Believe it or not some cats (particularly those that are pale-coloured) can get sunburnt. Use sunblock suitable for pets especially if they like to lay outside or keep them indoors when the sun and heat is at its peak.
- Provide spots with lots of shade and AC for indoor use.
- Watch for signs of overheating such as heavy panting and loss of energy. Should this occur – encourage your cat to drink cool water.
- Ice is also a great way to keep your cat’s cool! They can play with it, lick and eat it!
